Much of the country's 26,338 km2 is impressively mountainous, the highest peak being Karisimbi (4,507m) in the volcanic Virunga chain protected by the Volcanoes National Park.

The largest body of water is Lake Kivu, but there are other numerous lakes around the country, notably Burera, Ruhondo, Muhazi and Mugesera, some of which have erratic shapes following the contours of the steep mountains that enclose them.

ECONOMY:Primarily a subsistence agriculture economy, Rwanda nonetheless produces for export some of the finest tea and coffee in the world. Other industries include sugar, fishing and flowers for export.

CULTURE AND HISTORY

Like many other East African people, the Banyarwanda of Rwanda have a unique history that the traveler can share in serenity not found in many of the bustling cities of East Africa. Traditionally an all male dance troupe, the Intore dancers performed warlike dances for the monarchy. These have since been replaced with peaceful dances by both male and female dancers and are seen at many public functions. Rwanda’s Intore dancers have toured the world with their vibrant, expressive, beautiful, and graceful form of dance and perform at all major functions in Rwanda.
